As an initiative to substantially restore collective agreements we respond to the call of Alter Summit, for a Europe-wide solidarity day to the French employees who stand against the deregulation of labor relations. The austerity policies imposed by the European Union are doomed to lead the people of Europe at times that we believed we had finally left behind. The deregulation of labor relations is essentially a choice in favor of the capital and the increased exploitation on labor. This is an option, which imposes precarity and the employer arbitrariness as a normal condition.
The employees in Greece having experienced the harsh attack of neoliberalism, they already know that the “competitiveness” brings flexibility and wage cuts, while the “modernization of labor relations” brings unemployment, uninsured labor and challenges trade union freedoms. The forces of capital expressed through European institutions wish to impose the same context in every European country.
Faced with this reality, the resistance of workers and the solidarity between them is now a duty. The protection of every right gained by the European labor movement is a necessity. The battle that Greek employees will give in September has already begun in France. Today, not only we stand by the struggle of the French workers, but we give battle with them. Today, across Europe, in Paris, Athens, as in Madrid and in Lisbon, all employees rally for their labor rights and for a life with dignity.
MAYDAY – Collective Agreements Now
